Japan – China Sasakawa Medical Fellowship

Japan – China Sasakawa Medical Fellowship was established in 1986 as a scholarship scheme to invite Chinese researchers to Japan in order to develop potential leaders in the medical and healthcare fields in China and to further promote cooperation between the two countries in the medical and healthcare fields.

It was initiated as a joint project, the fruit of the strong desire of Ryoichi Sasakawa, Chairman of the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation, Morizo Ishidate, President of the Japan China Medical Association , and Chen Minzhang, Minister of Health of the People’s Republic of China.

With funding from the Nippon Foundation, and in cooperation with the Chinese Ministry of Health/International Exchange Centre and the Japan-China Medical Association, a total of nearly 2,000 researchers were invited from China to Japan from the first cohort in 1987 to the 31st cohort in 2012. Since 2013, the Japan China Medical Association has continued to operate the project. In 1991, an alumni organisation of researchers was set up and researchers have maintained links through the alumni association even after returning to China. The alumni association has also established six branches in China and one each in Japan and North America, and is actively engaged in activities to return the knowledge and skills learned in Japan to China.
