Global Forum 2019 held in Manila, Philippines

Global Appeal 2021 Side Event

With the global spread of the novel coronavirus, initiatives against leprosy in various countries have been discontinued or temporarily scaled back. In order that leprosy is not forgotten amid the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure that efforts against the disease resume in full once the pandemic is over, Sasakawa Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease) Initiative (SLI) *believes that it is important for organizations of persons with direct experience of Hansen’s disease to send a message to the world.

For World Leprosy Day 2020/World Hansen’s Disease Day 2020, SLI supported awareness-raising activities by people’s organizations that participated in the Global Forum in Manila in September 2019. These activities were carried out under a joint logo and slogan (“Hansen’s Disease-Free World with Knowledge and Love”) and made use of Facebook and other social media tools.

For World Hansen’s Disease Day 2021, we would like to collaborate once again with people’s organizations—particularly those that we are currently supporting and working together—and provide an opportunity to communicate the voices of persons affected by leprosy to the world through a series of webinars.

This webinar series formed a side event in the week leading up to the launch of Global Appeal 2021 to End Stigma and Discrimination against Persons Affected by Leprosy on January 31, 2021.
